Unity mobile game development

Polar Station
Survival.

Two years building a survival game with over 20 connected systems.

I was the sole Unity developer for this 2D survival game. I designed and built its connected gameplay systems, integrated the team’s art, audio and game design, and prepared production versions for Android and iOS.

My role and the team’s contribution

My development work.
The team’s creative work.

I was responsible for Unity programming. The team was responsible for art, audio, game design and balance.

My responsibility

All Unity programming

I designed the code structure and built the gameplay, interface behavior, saves, progress while the player is away, language support and analytics. I also prepared the Android and iOS versions and maintained the Unity code as the game developed.

Team contribution

Art, audio, design and balance

The team created the art, audio, game design and balance. I integrated their work in Unity and made it function together throughout the game.

20+ interconnected gameplay and technical systems

How the game’s systems work together.

Resources feed production, production supports research, and research unlocks new options. The game saves each result so the player can continue in the next session.

01

Survival needs & inventory

The game tracks the player’s condition, items and resources as they take actions, move between activities and return to a saved game.

  • Physiology
  • Inventory
  • Item state
  • Persistent state
02

Crafting & production

Players use resources in crafting recipes and production facilities. Each system updates the resources available to the others.

  • Crafting
  • Manufacturing
  • Energy
  • Resource economy
03

Research & progression

Research and quests unlock new options as the player advances through the game.

  • Research
  • Quests
  • Unlocks
  • Offline progression
04

Expeditions & minigames

Players leave the base for expeditions and minigames, then bring their rewards and changed condition back to the main game.

  • Expeditions
  • Hex-grid exploration
  • Minigames
  • Rewards

Saves, languages & mobile support

The game also needs reliable saves, multiple languages, usage analytics and working Android and iOS versions.

  • Saves
  • Localization
  • Firebase Analytics
  • Android · iOS

Saving progress & time away

Saved progress and timers stay in sync.

A unified JSON container, field-level persistence, autosave and pause/background saves protect long-lived state. Offline elapsed time is granted once and advances crafting, research, greenhouse growth, archive decryption, physiology and timed effects.

Game data & progress

Game events unlock the next steps.

ScriptableObject-driven items, recipes, research steps, quests and status effects feed an event-based progression model. Inventory changes, research completion and other gameplay events can satisfy conditions and unlock the next state.

Survival & exploration

Expeditions affect the player back at base.

Physiology turns player parameters into ongoing survival-state changes. Expeditions add hex-grid risk, damage, injuries, rewards and quest validation before results return to inventory, economy and persisted state.

Mobile features & services

Ads, purchases, languages and analytics.

Firebase Analytics instrumentation, Android/iOS configuration, rewarded and interstitial ads, consent handling, in-app purchases, localization and adaptive audio all sit beside the gameplay architecture.

Independent public gameplay review

Watch the game’s systems working together.

A public 25-minute review shows the Antarctic base, expeditions, research, production, survival-state management and embedded minigames working together.

Completed work

What I built for this project.

  • 01All Unity programming for gameplay, saves, interface behavior and supporting mobile features
  • 02Production versions prepared for Android and iOS
  • 03Saves, offline progression, localization and Firebase Analytics integrated into the product
  • 04A code structure that supported new features and content throughout more than two years of development

This case documents engineering scope and publicly visible gameplay. It does not claim current store availability, revenue, retention results or work performed by the art, audio, game-design and balance team.

How I can help your project

Starting or taking over a Unity game?

Let’s plan the next part of your game.

I can build gameplay systems, review and improve code from a previous developer, or update an older game so you can test it with players.

Have a limited budget? Tell me your priority and the range you’re comfortable with. I’ll be clear about a realistic first step.
